GUIDELINES FOR AIR CADET WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AT CONAIR

Background: The Air Cadet League in partnership with Conair is offering a 40 hour work experience program to selected senior cadets that will provide them with the opportunity to work in an aerospace technical maintenance facility and fulfil their High School Graduation Transitions work experience requirement. The program is designed to expose those cadets who are contemplating a career in the aerospace industry to a real life experience helping maintain aircraft.

Cadets attend the program as a high school student. To qualify for the program a cadet must:

  • be a resident of BC,
  • be a grade 11 or 12 high school student,
  • be eligible for enrolment in the provincial work experience program,
  • be excused from school for the period of the one week work experience,
  • have successfully completed a criminal record check, and
  • have a demonstrated technical interest.

Outline: The program consists of two separate one week employment periods with the opportunity to employ a max of four cadets each period. Successful students will work, without pay, with Conair for a period of 5 working days during which time they will work on the hangar floor under the direction of an aircraft maintenance engineer. Students will be expected to attend an orientation tour and briefing at Conair on Tues 31 Jan at 10am, provide their own pair of approved work safety boots and provide their own transportation to and from the Conair Maintenance Facility at the Abbotsford Airport. The Conair normal work day is from 7am to 3:30 pm. Students from outside the Lower Mainland are responsible for providing their own transportation, rations and quarters. The program will consist of two week long work serials of 4 students each. The first serial will be conducted from 6th to 10th Feb and the second from 13th to 17th Feb 2012.

Application Process:

  • A copy of the application along with both Conair's Release and Waiver of Liability and Confidentiality Agreement forms, a work resume and a 500 word essay describing why the applicant wishes to attend the program will be completed by the applicant and submitted to the Squadron.
  • The Commanding Officer and Squadron Sponsoring Committee Chairperson will help the applicant complete a criminal record check, review the application package and will make their recommendation based on the applicant's performance in the Air Cadet Program.
  • The completed criminal record check will be forwarded to Conair, attn. Peter Boniface.
  • Applicant takes the application package to school counsellor /work experience teacher who:
    • attaches evidence of completed in-school worksite safety awareness orientation
    • generates a Standard Worksite Agreement. The employer will be:

Selection: The student's file and criminal record check will be reviewed by Mr. Boniface who normally will interview the student prior to making his final selection decision and arranging a tour of the facility.

Supervision: The Director of Maintenance (or designate) is responsible for the supervision of the students while working in the Conair Facility. The work experience program is not an Air Cadet activity under the control and supervision of the Canadian Forces. It is an educational program of the Provincial School System.
